A sailboat is a ship powered by wind to travel over water. It has been used since prehistoric times to transport goods and people. Today, it’s a desirable form of recreation that appeals to a variety of lifestyles and allows people to enjoy the natural beauty of bodies of water. Sailboats are available in a wide range of sizes and can be used to experience everything from cruising to racing.
To build a sailboat, fiberglass laminating is first done on both the hull and deck of the boat. This is followed by the application of a skin coat of 4-5 oz (124-156 g) of “blown” fiberglass that looks like cotton candy. The fiberglass is then painted with a special resin called gelcoat, which hardens it. The resulting surface is smooth and shiny.
Once the fiberglass is finished, electrical wires and hoses for plumbing are hooked up and tested. The cabins, sitting rooms and areas, toilets (called heads on boats) and other interior components are then installed. These include the navigation systems, engines, sails and any necessary furnishings. Depending on the size of the sailboat, it may also have a galley and sleeping accommodations.
To steer a sailboat across a body of water, the tiller and rudder are steered by applying pressure to either side of the boat. The keel is a large fin that creates a drag force that negates the effect of wind on the sails, allowing the boat to proceed forward without sailing directly into the wind.
